| Vince,Susan | I live on the south
coast of England, half way between Bournemouth and Poole and about half
an hour's walk from the beach, with my husband Pete and two sons, Matthew
and Patrick, aged 16 and 14 respectively.
I first became aware of flatcoats after a visit to a pub in the Wye Valley back in the 1980s. They had this magnificent dog called Sam (I never did get to the bottom of his ancestry) but I was totally smitten. 10 years ago I started my own business working from home (wordprocessing and secretarial services) and my first Flatcoat, Cassie, arrived very shortly afterwards. We are now just starting out with the third one, Tess. After the arrival of the second one, Juno, I joined the Flatcoated Retriever Society and have enjoyed Flatcoat Fundays, done a little bit of showing but my main ambition is to go picking up. My other interests are tracing family history, collecting secondhand books, prints etc., going to auctions and antique fairs. |

Cassie was bought at the age of 7 months, as a family pet and companion for me, from her breeder who had "run her on". She was very quiet, laid-back, extremely intelligent and my constant and faithful companion.. My husband summed her up by often saying "how is it that dog understands everything you say?" Lacking in stamina and not particularly agile, we always considered her a bit delicate and coddled her accordingly. After two long illnesses last year, we lost her just one day short of her 10th birthday and she is sorely missed. |

My non-retrieving retriever - well why should she, she thinks she is a pointer! - Led to a very unusual style when we went picking up - "Well it's over here - if you want it that badly, pick it up yourself!" Very sweet nature but suffers from short term memory problems. My eldest son says she only has one brain cell and when that is occupied she cannot cope with anything else. It took me 3 years to get her to "sit". We are currently working on "sit and wait", mainly to stop her knocking herself out on the tailgate of the car when getting in. Reckon we might have mastered basic obedience by the time she's 10. Favourite item: tennis ball. Favourite occupation: bounding through a field of kale. We wouldn't be without her for the world. |

I said I wouldn't have a winter puppy but all my resolve went out the window when I discovered the puppy's grand-dam, Drusilla, was litter sister to Dilly, a dog Cassie (our first) loved more than any other dog in the world. Little Tess seems to have inherited the family spirit of unbounded enthusiasm and optimism. Not scared of anything, she beats up poor Juno unmercifully. Loves absolutely everyone and has the most endearing way of screwing up her face and grinning at you. |
